We have a whale of a time or baleen the jack

 We travel by zodiac to set foot on sea ice, which is frozen ocean.

I now can empathise with antarctic explorers as we also endure incredible hardships.

We are then whisked off by zodiac for a "pleasure" cruise. I was told there were whale sightings but all I could think about were those dinner rolls-should I have white or brown, why not both?




After a light 6 course lunch we disembark at Portal Point and hike up an Everest like summit, without even the advantage of having tampons attached to our boots.





Highlight of the day: 3 bread rolls for dinner!

I look out our window this morning and am greeted by the sight of icebergs. Up on the bridge we see land-on our side of the boat all we can see is water. Our first expedition is a zodiac cruise-getting in and out is a treachorous affair. we spot lots of wildlifes.ˋ Back on the boat we have our usual 6 course lunch-a big advantage being on a French boat. Then it is back onto the zodiacs for what was supposed to be a landing on shore which gets cancelled (avian flu)but is replaced with another zodiac "cruise". In the evening the captain turns on a display of cloud formations

Chillin' in Chile and perusing Peru

 So today(26/11) we set off on our mission, leaving behind the comforts of home for the harsh realities of Antarctic wastes. Realising the mistakes Scott made, we have taken along a team of gnarly ridgebacks to pull our sled  and later, as a reward, to be turned into a tasty fricasee or even a canine slushie. We sleep through a lot of the flight as our "entertainment system" doesn't work, meaning we had to make our own "entertainment". After a 4 hour layover in Santiago we proceed on to Lima and our Humboldt digs Dinner was flavoursome!

Attack of the killer penguins

 Today we are dropped off somewhere unpronounceable and we hike up a steepish trail ever wary of killer penguins. We are told if they sense danger they will attack en masse and leave no survivors. I fully expect to become  part of the rich life cycle on the antarctic penisula. We are returned to the boat and indulge in the usual grande bouffe for lunch-I restrict myself to just 4 desserts. Beautifully prepared roast penguin I have noticed an intersting  in antarctica and that is that the cold icy air makes one's clothes shrink-even the belts; I've never heard of this being described before, maybe I should publish a paper! In the afternoon we visit the aptly named Base Brown and ascend a slippery slope We ascend a narrow slippery slope for a view. Tonight I have 3 bread rolls, an event which eclipses all today's experiences.
