Day 1 at Sea

 The passengers sometime look like an outing from a home for the terminally bewildered; God only knows how they will survive the harsh conditions ahead. Mon Dieu, half of them are French!

It will take us 3 days to reach South Georgia island, but sacre bleu, they have arranged entertainment for us to pass the time; today's highlight, believe it or not, is a lecture on Plankton-the speaker actually makes the subject far duller than I thought it could ever be!

Captain Fabio fancies himself as somewhat of a standup comic and spends much of his time introducing minor functionaries on board with names such as Jean-Claude, Anee-Marie etc..

Our room has a verandah where one could survive about 3 minutes so we are issued with survival jackets-oo la la!

However the food is tres agreable.

In the evening was the galah dinner with all the French dressed up plus chic and everybody else........merde!

I look out our window this morning and am greeted by the sight of icebergs. Up on the bridge we see land-on our side of the boat all we can see is water. Our first expedition is a zodiac cruise-getting in and out is a treachorous affair. we spot lots of wildlifes.ˋ Back on the boat we have our usual 6 course lunch-a big advantage being on a French boat. Then it is back onto the zodiacs for what was supposed to be a landing on shore which gets cancelled (avian flu)but is replaced with another zodiac "cruise". Chillin' in Chile and perusing Peru

 So today(26/11) we set off on our mission, leaving behind the comforts of home for the harsh realities of Antarctic wastes. Realising the mistakes Scott made, we have taken along a team of gnarly ridgebacks to pull our sled  and later, as a reward, to be turned into a tasty fricasee or even a canine slushie. We sleep through a lot of the flight as our "entertainment system" doesn't work, meaning we had to make our own "entertainment". After a 4 hour layover in Santiago we proceed on to Lima and our Humboldt digs Dinner was flavoursome!

Attack of the killer penguins

 Today we are dropped off somewhere unpronounceable and we hike up a steepish trail ever wary of killer penguins. We are told if they sense danger they will attack en masse and leave no survivors. I fully expect to become  part of the rich life cycle on the antarctic penisula. We are returned to the boat and indulge in the usual grande bouffe for lunch-I restrict myself to just 4 desserts. Beautifully prepared roast penguin I have noticed an intersting  in antarctica and that is that the cold icy air makes one's clothes shrink-even the belts; I've never heard of this being described before, maybe I should publish a paper! In the afternoon we visit the aptly named Base Brown and ascend a slippery slope We ascend a narrow slippery slope for a view. Tonight I have 3 bread rolls, an event which eclipses all today's experiences.
